Program: Brian Fies local writer and cartoonist

Do you know what an Eisner Award is?  You may not. However if you come to hear Brian Fies, local writer and cartoonist speak, you will meet someone who has won one. For his first graphic novel Mom’s Cancer Brian was awarded the prestigious Eisner Award in the category of “Best Digital Comic”.  An honest, unflinching, and sometimes humorous look at the practical and emotional effect that serious illness can have on patients and their families, Mom’s Cancer is a story of hope—uniquely told in words and illustrations.

Brian also has a second digital novel “Whatever Happened to the World of Tomorrow?”, published in 2009 that is up for two Eisner awards.  http://brianfies.blogspot.com/

Program: David Bannister, Executive Director of the Laguna Foundation

The Laguna de Santa Rosa has been called “Sonoma County’s Ecological Treasure.”  It is a 14 mile wetland of great importance.

In 1989, the Laguna Foundation was founded to focus on the Laguna de Santa Rosa, the second largest freshwater wetland in Northern California and one of Sonoma County’s richest wildlife areas with over 200 species of birds along with many threatened and endangered species of plants and animals.   The ultimate goal is to take what is now a very compromised ecosystem and to restore it to the healthy, biologically diverse system it once was.

David Bannister, Executive Director of the Foundation will present a complete picture of what is being done to reach the goals.
